EMI, Universal Deal Moves Forward Citigroup's sale of EMI's recorded music and publishing divisions is moving forward this week, as Universal Music Group formally filed for approval of the deal with European Union regulators. An initial deadline of March 23 has been set for a ruling from the EU regulators. A statement from UMG simply says, "Universal Music Group confirms that it has submitted its filing to the European Commission for the acquisition of EMI's recorded music business. We will work closely with the Commission and remain confident of securing clearance."
Meanwhile, independent label coalition Impala has released its own statement, urging EU regulators to block the UMG-EMI sale. On the organization's webstite, Impala Executive Chair Helen Smith said, "The clock has finally started ticking in Europe. Ultimately we expect this to lead to an outright rejection of both Uni/EMI and Sony/EMI mergers. Keeping the online market as open as possible is essential for competition and for responding to piracy, as well as other market problems. Turning music into a two-horse race would hamper the natural development of the market and increase prices. No level of divestments or behavioural undertakings would prevent that from happening."
Impala added that "it will continue to co-operate fully with the regulators on both sides of the Atlantic, to make it clear why the deals would be the worst possible outcome for competition, artists and consumers, as well as for the development of a thriving and diverse online market."
Meanwhile, the New York Post reports that the interest rate on Sony's financing deal for EMI Music Publishing has dropped. Sources tell the paper that "the anticipated interest rate on the bonds, expected just last November to be about 12 percent, will come in at roughly 5.5 percent." The offering, which closed Friday, was reportedly so in demand that it attracted up to $3 billion in offers. One source said the high interest is due to the scarcity of such transactions recently.

Norah Jones' Little Broken Heart Norah Jones has set May 1 as the release date for Little Broken Hearts (Blue Note/EMI), her upcoming new album produced by Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton). Jones also revealed the album cover and track listing for the 12-song effort, which features original songs co-written by the duo. Jones drew the inspiration for the album cover from the vintage movie posters that Burton has hanging in his Los Angeles studio.
"Brian has this great collection of Russ Meyer posters in his studio, and this particular one, called Mudhoney, was right over the couch where I sat every day," Jones recalls. "I always was looking at it and thinking, 'That's so cool, I want to look like her!' I remember staring at the poster the whole time we made the record. It's a great visual."
As previously reported, Jones and Danger Mouse first worked together when he called upon her to contribute vocals to his 2011 album, Rome. After Jones wound up singing three songs on the record, she and Danger Mouse reconvened in his Los Angeles studio this past fall. Together they wrote all the songs and performed the majority of the instrumental parts for her new effort: Jones played piano, keyboards, bass and guitar, and Danger Mouse added drums, bass, guitar, keyboards and string arrangements.
Jones will tour extensively in 2012, performing at a mixture of festivals, amphitheatres and theatres in the U.S. and abroad. North American tour dates will be revealed shortly, but in the immediate future Jones will be performing at SXSW in Austin next month. She will debut songs from Little Broken Hearts with her new band at La Zona Rosa on March 17, and she'll also be performing with The Little Willies at Waterloo Records on March 15 at 1 p.m. and Antone's on March 15 at 10 p.m.
The track listing for Little Broken Hearts is as follows:
1. "Good Morning" 2. "Say Goodbye" 3. "Little Broken Hearts" 4. "She's 22" 5. "Take It Back" 6. "After The Fall" 7. "4 Broken Hearts" 8. "Travelin' On" 9. "Out On The Road" 10. "Happy Pills" 11. "Miriam" 12. "All A Dream"
